Photographing the craft of Glittering Edge
My photo commission with Glittering Edge was an unforgettable experience, a deep dive into the raw, fiery world of traditional blacksmithing and handcrafted metalwork. From the moment I stepped into the forge, the atmosphere was alive with heat, sound, and motion. It immediately felt like a place where materials are pushed to their limits and skill turns force into beauty.
I was commissioned to create a set of images that showcase both the craftsmanship and the character behind the work, focusing on Craig at the forge. Rather than only photographing finished pieces, I wanted to tell the fuller story, the process, the environment, and the hands that shape each creation. The workshop itself offered a rich visual backdrop: textured walls, timeworn tools, glowing embers, and layers of soot and steel that speak of years of dedication to the craft.
Watching Craig work was completely absorbing. Every stage, heating the metal, judging temperature by colour, shaping it with deliberate hammer strikes — required precision, strength, and deep experience. There is a rhythm to blacksmithing that becomes almost meditative, and I aimed to reflect that rhythm through my photography by capturing sequences of motion as well as quiet, focused moments between actions.
The changing light inside the forge made the shoot especially exciting. The contrast between dark surroundings and the intense glow of heated metal created dramatic, cinematic scenes that couldn’t be staged. Sparks flying, smoke rising, and metal cooling on the anvil gave me powerful storytelling frames that communicate both energy and authenticity.
This commission was a perfect example of why I love photographing artisans and makers. It’s about more than documenting products, it’s about revealing the human skill, passion, and environment behind them, and creating images that let viewers feel the craft as well as see it.
