Photographing the craft of Wm Sinclair & Son
Stepping into the workshop of Wm Sinclair & Son felt like entering a living piece of Scottish heritage. This photo commission quickly became much more than a simple documentation project, it evolved into an immersive journey into the artistry, precision, and passion behind traditional bagpipe making. From the moment I arrived, the space was alive with history, craftsmanship, and a quiet dedication that immediately inspired me as a photographer.
My goal was to create a visual story that highlighted the makers, their process, and the instruments themselves. The workshop offered an incredibly rich environment: warm wood tones, hand-selected materials, carefully arranged tools, and workbenches worn from years of dedicated use. Watching each pipe take shape, rom the initial selection of wood to the expertly crafted and finely tuned components, revealed the patience, skill, and attention to detail required to produce instruments that are not only beautiful but resonate with a powerful, distinctive sound.
What made this commission especially memorable was the generosity of the team. They patiently walked me through every step, explaining how each material is chosen, why certain techniques are used, and how small details impact both the sound and longevity of the pipes. Their pride and authenticity shaped the way I framed each shot, allowing me to capture the craft with honesty and respect.
The highlight of the day was hearing the finished bagpipes played, right there in the workshop. The space transformed from a quiet studio into one alive with rich, resonant music, creating a magical moment that I was privileged to photograph. This commission reminded me why I love documentary and brand photography, capturing the dedication, heritage, and stories behind passionate makers in images that last.
